The massive Palisades Fire broke out in Los Angeles on Tuesday afternoon, prompting mandatory evacuations affecting tens of thousands of people and highway closures. Later Tuesday, the Eaton Fire broke out in the foothills of Pasadena on the other side of Los Angeles County.

A number of wildfires are spreading across the Los Angeles area, fuelled by strong winds, engulfing homes, forcing tens of thousands to flee and killing five people. A state of emergency has been declared in California.

The Palisades Fire, located on the coast of Los Angeles, has grown to nearly 16,000 acres, officials said Wednesday, as authorities say Los Angeles County’s uncontained flames continue spreading—prompting the evacuation of tens of thousands of people.
